I walked a different way home. I’d read something in a magazine about taking baby steps away from a destructive relationship. Up till now, I’d stayed with Sam, fearful of leaving the security of a house, the familiar objects that surrounded me. Our last row convinced me I needed to act.
Until this morning, this had taken the form of tiny acts of rebellion – like walking a different way home from the shops. It was the plum blossom, a symbol of new life, that changed everything. It frothed, white and beautiful over the trees in the orchard. Seeing it gave me hope that there was life beyond Sam if I was brave enough to take the final step.
I picked a sprig of blossom to leave with my farewell note. It was time to take a new road.
