We have put together a list of common questions below, but if you have a question that is not answered here, please get in touch with us through our contact form.

Submission FAQs

  • Eligibility
  • My entry has received prize/payment in a writing competition, can I submit it?

    No.

  • My submission has appeared on my personal blog/social media page, is it eligible to submit?

As long as you don’t have thousands of followers, it’s fine to send us your work.

  • My submission has been published in another country, is it eligible to submit?

No, if your work has been published in another country, it is not eligible.

  • How do you define “published”?

We define published as an editorial decision that someone else has made to include your work in a publication – i.e. it has been chosen from a selection to be published. This includes print and online publication.

  • My submission has been published, can I still submit it?

No. We only print unpublished work.

  • Do you accept simultaneous submissions?

Yes, but if you find your submission has been accepted elsewhere, please let us know as soon as possible. Be sure to check that anywhere else you submit your piece also accepts simultaneous submissions.

If your piece is accepted for publication and/or shortlisted in a competition where the prize includes publication, you must withdraw your entry.

  • Who can submit?

Everyone can submit work to Palm-Sized Press. We accept submissions from anyone, located anywhere in the world.

  • Magazine Submissions
  • What time is the deadline?

Submissions will be accepted until midnight the night of the deadline. Check our Submissions page for our current deadlines.

As we receive submissions from all over the world, this will be midnight AoE – meaning midnight along the international dateline (GMT-12).

  • What if my piece is untitled?

Please title all submissions (there are thousands of “Untitled” pieces; you’ll stand out more if you give your work that little bit of extra love).

  • Should my title appear on my work?

    Yes, please.

  • Should my pages be numbered?

It is not necessary to number your pages.

  • How should I format my submission?

There is no required format – double-spaced, single-sided, font size 12 in a commonly used font, such as Cambria, Calibri, Times New Roman or Arial. Legibility is the important thing.

  • Do I need a cover sheet?

As long as you’ve filled out the information required in the upload form, you don’t need to include a coversheet, but you can if you’d like to.

  • I’ve uploaded the wrong file, what do I do?

Please just get in touch via our contact form.

  • I’ve noticed a glaring error in my submission after I’ve uploaded it, what do I do?

Please just get in touch via our contact form.

  • What should my upload file be titled?

Anything you’d like, but most people use the title of the creative work being entered. If your file has a different name, you must specify this on your submission form.

  • How should I submit art?

We ask that artwork be submitted at the highest quality possible (please, if possible, avoid using your phone to take a picture of your submission). However, we are aware that the upload form for art is limited to 60MB. Please submit the file that best represents the work. If your piece is chosen for publication, and we need a higher resolution, we will get in touch.

  • How long can articles/essays be?

We have not set a limit to length at this time, but please remember that these pieces are intended for a magazine. If the subject warrants a higher word count, we simply ask that you keep it within reason.

  • How many pieces can I submit?

You may as many pieces as you’d like, and you are able to attach multiple documents to the same submission form. Simply select more than one file in the upload window by either holding down the Control key (for Windows) or Command (for Mac).

If you are submitting multiple pieces for the same genre, we would prefer that you upload them as separate documents.

  • How can I get an idea of the kind of work you accept for publication?

You are welcome to order copies of our previous issues. This will show you the kind of fiction and art we have previously published.

  • What can I submit?

Flash fiction up to 500 words, articles/essays on writing and craft, and original artwork. Please check the Submissions page for any applicable themes.

We do not want submissions that are:

    • Gratuitously violent or sexual
    • Racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, xenophobic, or that otherwise seeks to target a particular person or persons
  • Submission Form Help
  • What do I do if I’m unsure my submission has reached you?

Please don’t send us another identical entry “just in case.” If you think something has gone wrong with the upload or your email hasn’t reached us, please just get in touch via our contact form, and we’ll check for you.

  • Will I receive a confirmation email once I have uploaded my submission?

Yes, you will be sent an automated confirmation email. If you haven’t received this email, please check your spam folder. If you still don’t see it there, get in touch with us.

  • What file format can I send?

Permitted file types are: doc, docx, txt, rtf, jpg, jpeg, png, gif. Please do not send submissions as PDF files.

NOTE: Please DO NOT lock your file for editing. Locking the file makes it harder for us to add content to the layout during the production phase.

  • The online upload isn’t working, what do I do?

Please get in touch with us using our contact form. We’ll look into what’s going wrong, and get back to you as soon as possible.

  • Why is there a submission fee?

The submission fee helps us pay our contributors.

  • How do I pay the submission fee, and how much is it?

Simply enter the submission fee in the field below “Submission Fee” on the form. Your payment will be processed via Paypal. You do not need to have a Paypal account – you can simply pay by card.

    The submission fee is $2.

  • Can I submit by post?

Unfortunately we cannot accept postal submissions. If you’re having any problems with the submission form, please get in touch with us here.

  • Can I submit by email?

No. Although we accept emailed submissions for the prompt responses, we ask that you please use our online form to send in all submissions for the magazine. We have a system in place that tracks and sorts all submissions sent via the form, which will help in the review process.

Submissions sent in any way other than the online form will not be considered.

  • After the Deadline
  • Will I really get paid if my work is published?

Yes. Payment will depend on the amount of submissions we receive, and you will receive more information once all entrants have been notified of the outcome of their submissions.

  • What happens to my work if it gets accepted for publication?

If we choose to accept your work for publication, we assume first serial rights over the piece or pieces until the issue in which your work will be featured is published, at which point your rights revert back to you, the artist or author.

Meaning: if we accept your work, you may not submit it elsewhere or share it publicly until after the issue has been published. If you republish your work elsewhere after publication, please acknowledge Palm-Sized Press as the original publisher.

  • When will I hear about the outcome of my submission?

We aim to inform all entrants of the outcome of their submissions within 3-4 weeks of the deadline.

Please note that we are a very small staff, with day jobs, but getting in touch with our writers and artists is our priority.

  • Will I be notified of the outcome of my submission?

Yes. Everyone who provided us with a valid email address will be sent an email notifying them of the outcome of their submission.

  • Can I still send a submission if the deadline has passed?

We will be opening submissions for the next issue in due time. Please do not submit anything until the next submission window has opened. Any submissions sent outside of our reading periods will not be considered.
